Fire Operations
Fire extinguishment is the traditional role of fire service organizations. Fire extinguishment is most often accomplished utilizing water. Almost all fire apparatus is developed to move water from a storage location to a fire. Water is either stored on the apparatus, in the public water system, in natural locations (such as streams and lakes) or in man made locations (such as swimming pools). The firefighter must advance on the fire, find the "seat" of the fire and extinguish the fire. While fire incidence is on the decline, fire extinguishment remains the most hazardous duty of the firefighter.
Fire prevention is an important role of every firefighter. However, fire prevention is the primary role of the Fire Inspector. Experienced firefighters form the backbone of the Inspection Bureau. Fire Inspectors visit businesses to insure compliance with the Fire Code adopted by the elected officials of South Holland. While not specifically charged with inspecting private residences, inspectors may enter a private residence by invitation and help the homeowner locate dangerous conditions. Fire prevention is also accomplished by public education.
Fire Investigation is the arduous task of determining a fire cause after a fire has been extinguished. The South Holland Fire Department investigates all fires utilizing experienced investigators. Fire Investigation is an important aspect of Fire Prevention.
