South Holland Police Department Mission Statement:
The Mission of the South Holland Police Department is to create and maintain a climate of safety and security within our community,
while delivering quality police and customer services, treating all with respect and dignity, representing ourselves and the village in
a positive manner and fostering an environment that actively solicits community participation.
The South Holland Police Department serves a community of over 22,000 citizens covering 7.3 sq. miles. The police department has an authorized strength of 45 sworn officers including the Chief of Police, two Deputy Chiefs of Police, and one Administrative Assistant to the Chief.
The Patrol Division is made up of 3 Lieutenants, 3 Sergeants and 28 patrol officers, and is under the command of Deputy Chief Hollis Dorrough. The Patrol Division actively patrols the streets answering all calls for service (28,862 calls in 2003). Patrol Officers are also required to be Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). Each certified officer carries an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) in their patrol car and responds to all paramedic calls. The Patrol division has a few specialty positions: Traffic Enforcement Officer, Bicycle Patrol Officer, DEA Agent, and K-9 Officer.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit is currently a 2-man unit that was started in 1997 with the help of a federal grant.
The Bicycle Unit was started in the Spring of 1998 as part of the South Holland Police Department's Community Policing Program. It is currently made up of one team leader and 4 patrol officers. Utilizing specially designed Trek mountain bikes, the Bicycle Unit is in operation 3 seasons out of the year and has been very successful.
The Investigations Division has a Detective Sergeant, 3 detectives, a Student Resource Officer (SRO), and a 2-man Special Operations Unit. The Department also participates in Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the South Suburban Emergency Response Team (SSERT), and the South Suburban Major Crimes Taskforce.
The South Holland Police Department employs an Administrative Deputy Chief, Robert Stegenga, a Records Center Manager, 5 part-time records personnel, and 4 community service officers. They handle all walk-in complaints and requests from the public. All of the above is done on a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week basis. Records personnel handle court entries and all computer data. The Village is part of ECom, a joint dispatch center that handles all 911 and other non-emergency calls along with communication officers.
