South Holland Police
Department Mission Statement:
The Mission of the South Holland Police Department is to create and maintain a
climate of safety and security within our community, while delivering quality
police and customer services, treating all with respect and dignity,
representing ourselves and the village in a positive manner and fostering an
environment that actively solicits community participation.
The South Holland Police Department serves
a community of over 22,000 citizens covering 7.3 sq. miles. The police department has
an authorized strength of 45 sworn officers including the Chief of Police, two Deputy Chiefs of
Police, and one Administrative Assistant to the Chief.
The Patrol Division is made up of 3
Lieutenants, 3 Sergeants and 28 patrol officers, and is under the command of
Deputy Chief Hollis Dorrough. The Patrol Division actively
patrols the streets answering all calls for service (28,862 calls in 2003). Patrol
Officers are also required to be Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). Each
certified
officer carries an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) in their patrol car and responds
to all paramedic calls. The Patrol division has a few specialty positions: Traffic
Enforcement Officer, Bicycle Patrol Officer, DEA Agent, and K-9 Officer.
- The Bicycle Unit was started in the Spring
of 1998 as part of the South Holland Police Department's Community Policing Program.
It is currently made
up of one team leader and 4 patrol officers. Utilizing specially designed Trek
mountain bikes, the Bicycle Unit is in operation 3 seasons out of the year and has been
very successful.
The Investigations Division has a Detective
Sergeant, 3 detectives, a Student Resource Officer (SRO), and a 2-man Special
Operations Unit. The Department also participates in Drug Enforcement
Administration (DEA), the South Suburban Emergency Response Team (SSERT), and
the South Suburban Major Crimes Taskforce.
The South Holland Police Department
employs an Administrative Deputy Chief, Robert Stegenga, a Records Center Manager, 5
part-time records personnel, and 4 community service officers. They
handle all walk-in complaints and requests from the public. All of the above
is done on a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week basis. Records personnel handle
court entries and all computer data. The Village is part of ECom, a joint
dispatch center that handles all 911 and other non-emergency calls along with
communication officers.
From the North and Chicago
take I-94 east to 159th Street (US Rt. 6) West - exit 73A. Follow 159th Street west
to the 6th stop light at Wausau Avenue (approximately 1.5 miles). Turn left on
Wausau, and immediately turn right into the parking lot.
From the South take Halsted
Street north to 159th Street. Turn right (east) onto 159th Street. Take 159th Street
to the 4th stoplight at Wausau Avenue. Turn right, and immediately turn right
again into the parking
lot.
From the West take 159th
Street east to State St. (Walt's foods, South Suburban College, Mobil gas Station). Go
under the railroad viaduct to the first stoplight (Wausau Avenue). Turn right,
and immediately turn right
again into the parking
lot.
From the East and Indiana take
I-80/I-94 (Borman expressway) west into Illinois. Continue following I-94 west toward
Chicago. Get off I-94 at 159th Street (US Rt. 6) West - exit 73A. Follow 159th Street west
to the 6th stop light at Wausau Avenue (approximately 1.5 miles). Turn left on
Wausau, and immediately turn right into the parking lot.
