South Holland Commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Nearly
600 people joined Mayor Don De Graff, Village Trustees and administrators on
Monday, January 17 at the South Holland Community Center for an inspirational
event celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who
brought hope and healing to America. The
program, themed “Live The Dream,” commemorated the timeless values Dr. King
taught through his example – the values of compassion, courage, truth and
justice.
Rev.
Alfonzo Surrett of Calvary Reformed Church delivered a keynote message of unity
and harmony, which was echoed by sensational instrumental renditions of “If I
Could Help Somebody” and “Precious Lord” from Rev. Dr. Carl E. King, Jr.
of Christ Community Church and Rev. Dr. Ozzie Smith, Jr. of Covenant United
Church of Christ, respectively. First
grader students from Greenwood School offered a musical tribute to Dr. King, in
addition to the rhythmic choreography of the Coolidge Step Drill Team and the
dramatic interpretation of Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech delivered by
the Thornwood Drama Team.
As
Rev. Heino Blaauw, pastor of First Reformed Church, concluded the event with a
prayer for peace, everyone held hands and sang “Let There Be Peace on
Earth.” “I was overwhelmed when I looked out and saw the audience,” shared
Dr. Kathryn F. Worthen, MLK Event Chairperson. “I felt a strong sense of
peace, joy and unity. The King
event helped me to realize that in South Holland and the southland, we are
living King’s dream.” Mayor De Graff, while delivering a King Day
proclamation, encouraged “citizens to engage in community service, which in
turn serves to honor Dr. King’s legacy, and advance the cause of justice and
equality in America.” Village Administrator J. Wynsma, enthusiastically moved
by the program, stated “The Village of South Holland and residents are
effectively setting an example for the region and the nation that Dr. King’s
dream can become a reality.”
