Good food, fun and fellowship at this year's CommUNITY Dinners to be held on October 13 - It's time again to register as a host or attendee for the CommUNITY Dinners, which will begin at 6:00pm in homes of South Holland residents. There will be fun dinner themes this year for all to enjoy.
Trustee Doorn announced a book signing at Calvary Book Store on Saturday, September 22 at 7:00pm, featuring New York Times bestselling author Beverly Lewis.
The next blood drive is Thursday, October 4 from 4:00 to 8:00pm at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 651 E 166th Street.
Trustee Doorn announced the passing of former Village Deputy Clerk Harold Pals, who will be featured in an upcoming issue of South Holland Today.
Parks and Recreation
Trustee Bennett announced that fall program registration will continue at the Community Center for anyone interested in signing up for available classes. For information on fall programs offered, the schedule is online at the Village website, www.southholland.org or contact the Community Center at 331-2940.
New equipment was installed recently in the fitness center, including three elliptical trainers, three bikes, and an Olympic incline bench.
A new swing set was installed at Roosevelt Park, and the parks maintenance team is currently working on the installation of new playground equipment at Pioneer Park, 164th and Kimbark.
Public Safety
A representative from the Muscular Dystrophy Association of South Cook County presented a plaque to Mike Scanlon and Steve Devaney of the South Holland Fire Department in appreciation of the firefighters union's monetary contribution to support services provided by MDA to clients living in South Holland.
Community Development
The Board approved Building Permits 2007-1012 through 2007-1065, representing $769,693 of investment in the community. According to Trustee De Young, the permits include an office remodel, electrical upgrades and fixtures for Universal Pool; a new roof for the Restoration Ministries Thrift Store; and a new home on 168th & Greenwood for B & K Development.
Other Notables:
Pastor Troy O'Quinn from River Oaks Community Church opened the meeting with prayer.
The Board approved a Community Standards Ordinance, which adds a definition to our municipal codes that protects and preserves our community standards with respect to a new state law addressing statewide video franchises.
The Board approved Register No. 589 for $918,073.91, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.
The Board approved the ratification of the Fraternal Order of Police union contract.
The Board approved contract awards for the Veterans Park concessions building to the following low bidders: Wigboldy Excavating, Inc. for excavation; Van Der Laan Brothers, Inc. for concrete work; Senford management & Construction, Inc. for carpentry; and Reichelt Plumbing, Inc. for plumbing.
The Board approved the adoption of the Flood Warning and Emergency Response Plan.
