Mayor's Coffee - Tuesday, September 11, 7:00pm - Come out and join Mayor Don A. De Graff for an informal coffee talk at the South Holland Community Center, 501 E 170th Street.
Heritage Haul 5K Kick-off Reception - Thursday, September 13, 5:30pm to 8:00pm at the Faith Family Future Center, 16931 South Park Avenue - Come out and receive information, register for the race, and participate in a silent auction of donated items from Chicago Cubs announcer Ron Santo and WGN Radio!
Heritage Haul 5K Charity Run/Walk - Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - Saturday, September 15, 8:00am - Put on your running and walking shoes for this year's event! The event will kick-off with entertainment, a warn-up, and welcome address presented by Mayor Don A. De Graff at First Reformed Church, 15924 South Park Avenue. Come to Village Hall or visit the website, www.southholland.org to register. Registration forms are also available in the South Holland Today.
Good food, fun and fellowship at this year's CommUNITY Dinners to be held on October 13 - It's time again to register as a host or attendee for the CommUNITY Dinners, which will begin at 6:00pm in homes of South Holland residents. There will be fun dinner themes this year for all to enjoy.
Parks and Recreation
Trustee Bennett announced that information for the Community Center fall program schedule is online at the Village website, www.southholland.org and booklets are available at the Community Center. Registration is September 6 for South Holland residents only. Open registration begins September 7 and 8.
Trustee Bennett gave a special thank you to everyone who helped make the Labor Day weekend festivities a huge success.
New swing sets will be installed at Roosevelt and Hollandale Parks within the next ten days.
Community Development
The Board approved Building Permits 2007-0947 through 2007-1011, representing $800,000 of investment in the community. According to Trustee De Young, the permits include
new signage for Jewel as part of a major renovation; a build-out for Granny's Pizza; modifications for Sprint/Nextel's tower antenna; remodeling for Rupari Foods; a temporary "Coming Soon" sign for Chase Bank; updated signage and a new logo for Saturn of South Holland; new fencing for Chicago Heights Glass; and a new office build-out and signage for Dr. Rose Chavez.Other Notables:
Village Board President Don A. De Graff opened the meeting with prayer.
The Board approved the pursuit of a grant from the Department of Natural Resources for a canoe launch at Paarlberg Park. This canoe launch will complement the existing launch at Gouwens Park, providing a 2.5 mile canoe trip.
The Board approved Register No. 587 for $734,069.40 and No. 588 for $657,308.83, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.
The Board approved an authorization for the purchase of fitness equipment, including 3 elliptical trainers, 3 bikes, and an Olympic incline bench.
President De Graff and Trustee Chambers introduced David Nettles, a new addition to the South Holland Fire Department. Newly hired as a Firefighter II, Mr. Nettles is a former POC and certified paramedic.
