based on the June 4, 2007 meeting.

copies of the meeting minutes from the Village Clerk's office in the Municipal building.

Board Meetings are usually held at 8 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month at Village Hall.

Fire Chief retires with distinguished record

Village Board President Don A. De Graff praised retiring Fire Chief James S. Wiley for 36 years of distinguished service to the Village.

Newly appointed Fire Chief Randy Stegenga was joined by his wife who pinned on his Fire Chief badge as Mayor Don De Graff looked on. The former fire inspector and 26 year veteran of the Fire Department is succeeding retiring Fire Chief Wiley in the post.

Mark Your Calendars

Library Programs - "Get a Clue" (ages 7-14) and "Reading: A Staple of Life" (Ages 15 and up) Summer Reading Programs run June 4 through July 28. Several programs are planned in June and July, and space is limited, so sign up early! Registration for programs begins 2 weeks prior to the start of each program.

Neighbor Day - June 16. Residents are encouraged to meet and greet their neighbors.

Independence Day Celebration - July 4. This year's event will be held at Thornwood High School, 171st & South Park Avenue (south ballfields). The event will feature a performance by the South Holland Municipal Band at 7:30pm, followed by a spectacular fireworks show at 9:00pm.

Heritage Festival Artists Gallery - The deadline to sign up for the Artists Gallery is July 31. The gallery provides South Holland residents an opprtunity to display their artwork during the Heritage Festival on Labor Day weekend, August 30 to September 1.

Vehicle Stickers and Dog Licenses now available - Vehicle stickers may be purchased by mail or picked up at Village Hall. The stickers must be displayed by August 1 to avoid a 50% late fee. Dog licenses are also available for purchase at Village Hall.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits Nos. 2007-0455 through 2007-0519, representing $554,290 of investment in the community. According to Trustee De Young, the permits include signage for Cleaner Depot at 350 E 162nd Street, a foundation permit for Valley Kingdom Ministries' upcoming Prayer Center addition, and a demolition permit for Ed Miniat. 

Other Notables:

Reverend Pete Tassio of King's Community Church opened the meeting with prayer.

Engineer's Report: Construction on Cottage Grove Avenue is now 50% complete, and work is one month ahead of schedule.

The Board approved an ordinance authorizing the sale of the Village's portion of property located at 17100 Halsted (the former Knights Inn) to a developer.

The Board approved Register No. 578 for $1,048,112.91 and No. 579 for $229,081.19, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.

Trustee Bennett announced that summer registration held last week was very successful. Registration will continue for anyone interested in signing up for available classes. Most programs will begin the week of June 11. in addition, the Community Center pool is closed June 4 through June 10 for necessary maintenance and repairs.

The Board approved the acquisition of a fire department vehicle through the state purchase program.
