New Commissioners Appointed

New appointees Jeff Courtney and Lisa Newman bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the Planning and Development Commission.

Community Coordination

Trustee Doorn commended the Communications Department and the Communications Commission for the success of the 2006 Diversity Dinners celebration. Nineteen dinners were held Saturday, October 14, in which residents enjoyed an evening of great food and lively conversation. The Northwest Indiana Times also covered the evening's festivities.

Nominations for the Mayor's Leadership Awards are being accepted until December 31. Nomination forms are available at Village Hall as well as on the Village's website, www.southholland.org. Additional information about the awards can be found in the latest edition of South Holland Today and on the Village's website.

Lions Club Chili Supper - November 15

Trustee Bennett announced that the annual South Holland Lions Club Chili Supper will be held at the Community Center on Wednesday, November 15, from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. The cost is $6 per ticket, and children six and under eat free. Tickets are available from Lions Club members or at the door.

The annual South Holland Night with the Chicago Bulls is Monday, November 6. Tickets for the event are nearly sold out. For more information, contact the Community Center at 331-2940.

The first four months of the fiscal year show an increase in the number of recreational programs offered at the Community Center. There have been 226 programs offered, compared to 192 at this time last year.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits No. 2006-1136 through 2006-1185, representing $1,104,000 of investment in the community. According to Trustee De Young, the permits include electrical upgrades for 3 new machines for Carl Buddig, signage for a new business, Maxwell Street Grill, foundation for a 6,000 square foot retail building next to the new Walgreens currently under construction, demolition by the Village and the City of Harvey of the Knights Inn Motel on 170th & Halsted, and 1 new home in the Preserves of South Holland subdivision.

Other Notables:

Village Board Trustee Mathew James opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board passed a resolution encouraging the Cook County Assessor to grant real estate tax relief to South Park Avenue business owners and property owners for 2006.

The Board passed a reimbursement resolution to utilize the 2006A bond issue for certain capital expenditures related to Route 6 and Town Center projects.

As part of the Town Center redevelopment project, the Board authorized the purchase of three properties: 237 E 161st Place, 260 E 162nd Street, and 261 E 161st Place.

The Board passed a resolution to incorporate language from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation Department's ordinances into the Village of South Holland's Sewer Use and Sewer Charges Ordinance.

The Board approved Register No. 556 for $2,288,144.41, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.

Trustee James presented a letter of commendation on behalf of a resident for the exemplary work of the Public Works Department following the most recent storm.
