Diversity Dinners set for October 14

Trustee Doorn reported that there is still time for residents to sign up to attend a Diversity Dinner. The dinners will take place Saturday, October 14, beginning at 6:00pm. Whether you are interested in hosting or joining another group of residents as a guest, it's an opportunity to meet new people, form lasting bonds, and celebrate the diversity of South Holland, said Doorn. Contact Mary Ann Thornton at 210-2918 if you would like to participate.

The Mayor's Leadership Awards recognize the ways that residents, through their volunteer efforts, contribute to upholding the values of faith, family, and future for the Village. From now until December 31, residents can nominate fellow residents who have contributed outstanding community service in one of these areas. Nomination forms are available online for each category on the Village website. Award recipients will also participate in a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in February 2007.

Fire Prevention Week highlights cooking safety

Trustee Chambers announced that Fire Prevention Week is October 8 - 14. The theme this year is "Preventing Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat". He encouraged residents to remember to test their smoke detectors and to check their carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are working properly.

The silent Parade of Lights will be held October 10 to honor fallen firefighters. The parade will begin after a brief service at 7:00pm at Thorn Creek Church, 1875 E 170th Street. The route for the parade is in the October edition of South Holland Today.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits No. 2006-1066 through 2006-1135, representing $1,775,000 of investment in the community. According to Trustee De Young, the permits include renovations and additions for Thornton Township Hall, a new roof for Drumm Funeral Home, sidewalk replacement for Valley Kingdom Ministries, lighting and interior display upgrades for BP Amoco, gates with electronic operators for FedEx, the remodeling of the old Fannie may building to accommodate two new businesses, and blacktop replacement for Thorn Creek Church.

Other Notables:

Village Board President Don A. De Graff opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board approved Register No. 554 for $391,887.93 and No. 555 for $1,559,261.45, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.

Parks and Recreation Report: Trustee Bennett announced that the park maintenance crew is catching up on mowing the parks. Wet weather caused many delays, but the crew is back on its normal mowing schedule. All ball fields will be receiving a "facelift". By the middle of October they should all be in pristine condition and ready for play in the spring. The park maintenance crew removed the old play set from Thorn Creek Park. They anticipate having a new piece of equipment in place there later this fall.
