Board Meetings are usually held at 8 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month at Village Hall.

Reporter honored for 13 years of service to South Holland Today

"From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for all that you've done for the Village," said Mayor Don De Graff while lauding the accomplishments of retiree Marlene Cook. A journalist and public relations veteran for 36 years, Marlene has won the hearts of many while covering features for the South Holland Today newspaper, including the award-winning Ask South Holland Today column.

Public Safety

Trustee Chambers encouraged residents to display at their home the newly developed South Holland Neighborhood Watch sign, We Care... We Watch... We Call Police. He explained that the sign can be used as an effective tool to build community cohesion and to enhance communication with police officers. The signs are available at the Village Hall and the Police Station. Chief of Police Warren Milsaps also encouraged residents to attend the community policing meetings for their area.

Community Coordination

Trustee Doorn thanked all of the staff who made the Independence Day Celebration a success.

The next blood drive will be held Tuesday, August 3, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Village Hall, 16226 Wausau Avenue.

The Heritage Festival will be held Thursday, August 31 through Monday, September 2. Look for more information on the events in the August edition of South Holland Today and on the Village website, www.southholland.org 

Parks and Recreation

Trustee Bennett reported that the pool and whirlpool at the Community Center will be shut down from August 14 through August 28 to perform annual maintenance procedures and maintenance inspections.

The South Holland Night with the Gary Railcats Baseball Team will be held Wednesday, August 2 at 7:00pm. Tickets are on sale at the Community Center.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits No. 2006-0705 through 2006-0777, representing $803,285 of investment in the community. On behalf of Trustee De Young, Trustee Doorn highlighted a few of the permits issued, including new windows at Rest Haven South, a two-directional sign for Gibson Chevrolet, a concrete pad for a new storage garage at the Midwest Carvers Museum, demolition of the DeYoung Furniture and Computer Repair Depot buildings, and one new home in The Preserves of South Holland subdivision.

Other Notables:

Pastor Peter Tassio of King's Community Church opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board approved a resolution adopting the 2006-2007 Appropriation Ordinance.

The Board approved an Option Agreement regarding the potential purchase of the Village Free Church property, located at 169th and South Park Avenue. The agreement provides the Village with 60 days to conduct a needs and use analysis before deciding on whether or not to purchase the property.

The Board approved the Annual Prevailing Wage Ordinance.

The Board approved Class 6B resolutions for a 10,000 square foot addition for Rupari Foods, formerly Zoll Foods, located at 15600 Wentworth, and a 6,000 square foot addition for Pol-Trailer, located at 16310 Vincennes.

The Board approved a text amendment to clarify zoning specifications for Town Center building uses.

The Board approved Register No. 547 for $918,150.05, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.
