Learn about the property tax appeal process

Trustee Doorn invited residents to attend the upcoming property tax appeal meeting, hosted by Mayor Don A. De Graff, the Village Board of Trustees, and members of the Cook County Board of Review.  The meeting, scheduled for Saturday, March 18 at 10:00am at the South Holland Community Center, is intended to walk residents step-by-step through the tax appeal process.  All forms needed for the process will be available at the meeting.

Residents are also invited to join Mayor De Graff, members of the Board of Trustees, and the Village Administration for the next Mayor's Coffee on Tuesday, March 21 at 7:00pm at the Community Center.

Community Policing

Trustee Sullivan noted that Community Policing meetings held at the South Holland Public Library and Community Center are immensly popular.  With the new Community Policing Initiative, residents have the opportunity to meet with police officers to discuss any safety issues on their minds.  Residents are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings for their neighborhood.  Information concerning the day and location of these meetings is available on the Community Policing information card that was recently mailed to residents' homes and on the Village's website, www.southholland.org

Parks and Recreation

Trustee Bennett announced that members of the Parks Maintenance staff were recently certified by the Department of Agriculture to handle various pesticides.

The second session of swim and exercise will begin March 20 at the Community Center.  Residents are encouraged to register for a class.

On April 8, 10:00am to 3:00pm, the Community Center will host an art show.  The display will include art work from members of the Community Center's art class.  The show is free to the public.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits No. 2006-0085 through 2006-0125, representing $1,385,273 of investment in the community. On behalf of Trustee De Young, Trustee Doorn reported that the permits include signage for All Steel Structures located at 163rd and Vincennes, demolition of the former Mentink Bakery building at 160th and South Park Avenue, and permits for two new homes in The Preserves of South Holland subdivision.

Other Notables:

Pastor Georgina Ayala from Living Word Training Center South opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board approved a motion to designate Trustee Larry De Young as Mayor Pro-tem for this meeting in light of the scheduled absence of Village President Don A. De Graff.
