Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
Trustee Chambers encouraged residents to donate non-perishable goods for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. A drop-off site is available at the South Holland Community Center, 501 E 170th Street. This effort will continue through the end of September. In addition, the South Holland Ministerial Association is accepting monetary donations through the end of the month, and Thornton Township is organizing a telethon in conjunction with Cook County Commissioner Deborah Sims and South Suburban College. For additional information, residents are encouraged to visit the Village's website, www.southholland.org or watch the public access cable channels.
Community Coordination
Trustee Doorn acknowledged the due diligence and hard work of the Village employees who made the Heritage Festival a resounding success. All of the events, from the Bocce Tournament, to the Car Show, the Jesse White Tumblers, the South Holland Largest Block Party, Sunday Worship Service and Paarlberg Fest, were all well attended and well received by residents. Staff from Communications, Parks and Recreation, ESDA, Police, Fire, and Public Access worked especially well together for residents to enjoy all of the festivities.
Residents were encouraged to attend the Mayor's Coffee to be held on Tuesday, September 13 at 7:00pm at the Community Center. Representatives from the Illinois Department of Transportation will be on hand to talk about the current construction and will also tell residents what is in store for the duration of the project.
Parks and Recreation
Trustee Bennett announced that the registration for fall programs will continue at the Community Center during building hours. Most classes begin the week of September 12.
The Fitness Center will be undergoing some improvements in the near future. Five new pieces of equipment will be added during the month of October.
The annual Harvest Fest is planned for Thursday, October 27 at the Community Center. The event is free and restricted to South Holland residents only. Registration, with proof of residency, begins September 19 at the Community Center. Space is limited, so sign up early.
Community Development
The Board approved Building Permits No. 2005-0923 through 2005-1021, representing $409,754 of investment in the community. Included in those permits, according to Trustee De Young, are new paving in front of the South Holland Public Library, new signs for Happy Days Child Care and Classy Nails, new paving for Dreyer, Ooms & Van Drunen, and new windows for First Christian Reformed Church.
