Community Coordination

Trustee Doorn thanked all those who worked diligently to make the Independence Day festivities a success, in particular, Mary Ann Thornton, Pat Mahon, and the Departments of Public Works, Parks and Recreation, ESDA, Police and Fire.

She also urged residents to mark their calendars for upcoming events, including the Annual Heritage Festival, September 1 through 5, and Diversity Dinners, to be held Saturday, October 22nd.  Those interested in hosting or attending a dinner should call the Village Hall at 210-2904.

Information on these and other upcoming events can be found in the August issue of South Holland Today, the public access and the Village website: www.southholland.org

Parks and Recreation

Trustee Bennett announced that Friday, July 1 was the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Community Center.

Park maintenance staff trimmed trees, spread fresh mulch, painted the Anti-Aircraft Missile and prepared Veterans Park for the Independence Day festivities.  They also landscaped Van'O Homestead.

The old pavilion at Riverview Park has been torn down to make way for a "pocket" park, which will include a new garden area with raised planters, benches, and a tree.

The Parks Department has contracted Thornton Equipment to trim out creek banks in Van'O, Pioneer, Maicach, and DeYoungs Grove Parks.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits No. 2005-0638 through 2005-0723, representing $540,000 of investment in the community.  Included in those permits, according to Trustee De Young, are an underground lawn sprinkler installed for South Holland Nissan on Van Dam Road, signage for a new business, the Diamond Auto Center, located at 27 E Sibley Blvd., and the remodeling and upgrading of equipment for South Park Center's Pizza Hut.  There is also one permit that may be eligible for a flood proofing rebate, and 5 rebates are now in process.

Other Notables:

James McKinney III from Kingdom Ministries opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board approved Register No. 510 for $512,617.22, and No. 511 for $225,811.88, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.

The Board approved resolutions authorizing the purchase of properties at 209 E 161st Place and 306 E 162nd Street as part of the Town Center redevelopment.

The Board approved a resolution authorizing the submission of ten Community Development Block Grant applications.  The grants are for dollars to cover the expense of demolition of Village-owned properties as part of the new Town Center redevelopment.

Village Board President Don A. De Graff stated the commitment of the board to work with members of the South Holland Historical Society to explore options to preserve the True Dutch Reformed Church.
