Community Coordination

Trustee Doorn announced the recipients of the 2005 Mayor's Leadership Awards.  Rev. Heino Blaauw of First Reformed Church of South Holland received an award for Faith Leadership; Cindy Miston, founding member of the Neighborhood Groups Organizing Committee, received an award for Family Leadership; and Police Officer Maurice Roberts was presented the Future Leadership award.  The award recipients were recognized at the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, February 8 at the Community Center.  The dinner was attended by nearly 200 enthusiastic volunteers who serve on various boards, commissions, and committees.

South Holland residents are encouraged to attend the next Central Committee meeting on Thursday, March 31 at 7:00pm at the Community Center.  Ralph Martire, Executive Director of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, will be presenting information on House Bill 750, a proposed school finance reform bill designed to offer property tax relief and increase school funding.

Parks & Recreation

Trustee Bennett announced that the First Annual South Holland Talent Show was held at the Community Center on Saturday, February 19.  The audience had a good time as nine great performers showcased their talents.

The Aerobic and Fitness Association of America will be holding their Personal Trainer Workshop and Certification Classes at the Community Center on March 18 through 20.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits No. 2005-0058 through 2005-0088, representing $178,676 of investment in the community.  Included in those permits, according to Trustee De Young, is fencing for the Citgo station on Sibley Boulevard and State Street, remodeling for Roseland Fur on Route 6, and upgrades for Nicky's Gyros, a new business located at 715 W 172nd Street.

Other Notables:

Pastor John Lang from Redeemer Lutheran Church opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board approved Register No. 498 for $1,148,743.17, covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.  Trustee Veld commended the department heads for working within the budget, now that the fiscal year is 75% complete.

The Board passed a Class 8 Resolution for SZF Communications, located at 100 W 168th Street.

The Board approved a re-zoning for development of a new subdivision, "The Preserves of South Holland".

The Board approved the acquisition of property at 264 E 161st Place to further expand redevelopment opportunities in the downtown area.

The Board filled a vacancy on the Planning and Development Commission with the appointment of Marion Smith.  Trustee De Young commended Ms. Smith for her initiative and support of the department over the past year.
