Village Announces New Appointees

Village President, Don A. De Graff and the board adopted a resolution honoring the distinguished service of Richard P. Zimmerman, now retired after serving as the Village Administrator for 15 years.  A resident of South Holland since 1957, Mr. Zimmerman, served the Village as a Trustee for 11 years, as president of both the South Holland Lion Club and the South Holland Babe Ruth, and as the chair of the Park Advisory Board.  He also taught 6th grade at McKinley High School for twenty years.

Village President Don A. De Graff appointed J Wynsma and Pat Mahon as Village Administrator and Deputy Village Administrator, respectively.  Prior to their appointments, Ms. Mahon was Director of Communications with the Village, and Mr. Wynsma served as assistant to former Village Administrator, Richard Zimmerman and managed the Village's special projects.

Community Coordination

Trustee Doorn announced the 71st annual Independence Day Celebration, July 5 at Veterans Memorial Park.  Come out to enjoy games, food, entertainment and the best fireworks display in the southern suburbs.  More details on the day's festivities are available in brochures at the Village Hall, the June/July edition of South Holland Today, and the village website: http://www.southholland.org

Parks & Recreation

Trustee Bennett announced that residents are invited to enjoy a fun-filled family event with the Gary Wildcats baseball team on July 22 for South Holland Night.  Tickets are available for $25 at the Community Center, which includes VIP entrance, suite level seating, all you can eat (hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, dessert and soft drinks) and free parking.

Community Development

The Board approved Building Permits No. 2004-513 through 2004-620 representing $877,000 of investment in the community.  Included in those permits, according to Trustee DeYoung, is the new South Holland Mitsubishi, First National Bank, work at Jimbooo's, Calumet Lift Truck, and property recently purchased by Restoration Ministries at 351 W 162nd Street (formerly Gee Lumber).

Other Notables:

Rev. Tom Kok from Peace Christian Reformed Church opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board approved a Private School Conditional Use Permit for the facility located at 15455 South Park Avenue as a K-8 school.

The Board approved the naming of newly retired Village Administrator Richard Zimmerman as a member of the police pension board.

The Board approved Register No. 474 in the amount of $1,593,253.86 covering day-to-day operations, vendor payments, and salaries.

Trustee Chambers introduced newly hired police officer Michael Lareau, a lifelong resident.  Chambers also announced the South Holland Fire Department recently received recognition for its role in providing key evidence in an investigation in Calumet City.

Village President, Don A. De Graff informed the audience that the Village of South Holland has sent condolences and spoken to Stephanie Dukes.  Mrs, Dukes, a South Holland resident, is the widow and mother of the drowning victims in Texas which took the lives of her husband, daughter (9) and son (13).
